May 2014: Can-only music event refreshes the North West

Inspired by the spirit of South Africa's music talent and the freshest new sounds, The CAN DO! Refresh Tour, which brings can-only events to all nine provinces during 2014, had its fourth stop in Klerksdorp, North West this past weekend.

Over 7000 partygoers together with local vendors, artists and DJs gathered at the free, can-only concert hosted by CAN DO!, Nampak Bevcan's consumer facing brand in partnership with Collect-a-Can at Matlosana Stadium in Jouberton, Klerksdorp.

"We encourage people to make the most environmentally friendly choice by choosing their beverages in cans, while at the same time supporting talented local performers and having a good time in a safe environment," says Alexandra Bouwer, marketing manager for Nampak Bevcan’s CAN DO! brand.

“Cans are safe and easy to manage at big events, and are also the most environmentally friendly form of beverage packaging with over 72% of all cans produced being recycled," says Bouwer.
Collect-a-Can, Southern Africa's can recovery company was also onsite and collected more than 50 kg of cans for recycling.

To maximise the positive influence, Collect-a-Can will donate a total of R3000 to two local charities on the partygoers' behalf. The money generated through the cans collected will contribute to a portion of the total donation. The benefitting charities are Klerksdorp Rotary Club's 'Pimp Your Pavement' campaign, that aims to plant life into Klerksdorp's streets and educate the community about the importance of a green environment and Khaya Tshepo Home of Hope for Vulnerable Children, that looks after and educates young children made vulnerable by poverty, illness and the death of their parents.

"The weighing and collecting of cans at the event is aimed at creating awareness about the value of used cans, ultimately encouraging partygoers to collect cans and generate an income for themselves or others after the party" says Zimasa Velaphi, public relations and marketing manager for Collect-a-Can.
