May 2014: Can-only music event refreshes the West Rand

Kagiso, Mogale City, West Rand: Thousands of people flocked to the Kagiso Stadium in, Mogale City to see Dr Malinga (top left photo),  Arthur Mafokate (top right photo), Chomee, Candy, Busiswa, DJ AJ and others  smash out some vibey tunes at the CAN DO! Refresh Day on Saturday, 26 April 2014. This event formed part of the fifth annual Mogale City Beer Festival, which took place from 25 to 27 April 2014.

Up to 4 000 partygoers together with local vendors, artists and DJs gathered at the West Rand event of the year, which was brought to life by Gloria Mswana, the mother of the Mogale City Beer Festival and owner of Chaff Pozzy tavern in Kagiso, Mogale City.

"As a local business owner I feel privileged and proud to have the support of my community and to be able to create an event that empowers our youth, local businesses and performers by offering a platform to showcase their talents and share their passion," says host and Kagiso local, Gloria Mswana.

"The CAN DO! Refresh Day formed part of the nationwide CAN DO! Refresh Tour, which brings can-only events to all nine provinces during 2014," says Alexandra Bouwer, marketing manager for Nampak Bevcan’s CAN DO! brand. "We encourage people to make the most environmentally friendly choice by choosing their beverages in cans, while at the same time supporting talented local performers and having a good time in a safe environment."

Over the years, the Mogale City Beer Festival has become synonymous with community development, opportunity and excitement, with the entire event geared towards creating a positive influence for local vendors, artists and DJs.

To maximise the positive influence, local can-collectors and recyclers were given the opportunity to collect the empty beverage cans to ultimately sell the cans for cash and to earn an income.
Collect-a-Can, Southern African can recovery company was also onsite to collect the remainder of cans for recycling, during and after the weekend festivities.

South Africans will get another opportunity to refresh their thinking, their world and their future with a can in hand at the next free CAN DO! Refresh Tour event, which is set to take place at Joubertina Stadium in Klerksdorp, North West Province on Saturday, 24 May 2014 from 10:00 until late.
