March 2012 - Collect-a-Can brings books and excitement to Soweto’s youth

There was lots of fun to be had during the Library Week event hosted by Collect-a-Can in conjunction with Jozi FM at Dlamini Hall in Soweto this past weekend. The event, which was broadcast live on Jozi FM, attracted many local children who got to showcase their singing talents on live radio as well as participate in competitions, listen to a compelling story told by the Jozi FM story-teller and burn off some energy on a jumping castle. Every child received a colouring book and activity sheets in Flipfiles sponsored by Flipfile Company and coloured pencils sponsored by Pritt SA were made available. Thanks to a generous sponsorship by Pan Macmillan, Collect-a-Can was able to hand out 150 books to children from the Girls and Boys children’s club in Pimville Soweto; these will go a long way to encouraging reading amongst the children. The CAN Man and the Pritt Man both put in appearances to the delight of the children who jostled for a photo opportunity.

“At Collect-a-Can we are passionate about the education of the youth,” said Zimasa Velaphi, Public Relations and Marketing Manager at Collect-a-Can. “Holding an event that revolves around the importance of reading seemed pertinent to us as we recognise that when individuals are educated and informed about the importance of preserving their environment then they will become more environmentally responsible citizens,” Velaphi explains. “We would like to extend our thanks to all the sponsors that made this wonderful event possible and we hope to be able to hold many such events in the future,” she concludes.
