June 2012 - Collect-a-Can supports World Environment Day 2012

World Environment Day (WED) is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. It takes place annually on the 5th of June and is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme. This year World Environment Day will be hosted by Brazil with the theme “Green Economy: Does it include you?” Collect-a-Can is passionate about causes that create green-awareness and fully supports World Environment Day.

“This year’s theme is particularly valid to us as we believe that the green economy should include all South Africans, not just those that work within the green sector,” says Zimasa Velaphi, Public Relations and Marketing Manager at Collect-a-Can.

“Each and every one of us can make a difference by recycling our waste,” Velaphi continues. “Not only will your environment be cleaner, but by making sure your waste gets recycled, you can earn yourself a bit of extra money (if you take your waste to a recycling depot yourself or bring your cans to Collect-a-Can) or help a waste collector, who collects recyclable waste for a living, to increase his or her income. Collect-a-Can would like to encourage every South African to pay more attention to what they’re throwing away, especially if it represents a reusable resource,” she concludes.

Businesses can also make a difference by installing a multi-recycling system at the office. In general, more than a third of the waste generated by offices is recyclable. This includes waste paper, metal cans, polystyrene, plastic and glass bottles. Even batteries and light bulbs (including florescent bulbs and tubes) are recyclable although they require special handling.

There are a number of recycling companies in South Africa that offer the service of collecting recyclable waste from homes or offices. Many schools and churches also run multi-recycling centres and value the support of companies and individuals.

Collect-a-Can pays cash for all cans (including beverage, food, oil, paint, polish and aerosol cans) brought in to their depots.
