Clean-up SA Week and Recycling Day are celebrated annually across South Africa. These call-to-action campaigns aim to raise awareness with the general public about the importance of cleaning up litter and recycling in South Africa. “The message that these campaigns seek to convey is that every South African regardless of age, race, background or economic status has a responsibility to help keep the country clean and litter free,” says Zimasa Velaphi, Public Relations and Marketing Manager at Collect-a-Can. “Individual involvement is key,” she states.

Collect-a-Can will kick-off the week with a clean-up day in the area around Nkanyezi Recreational Sports Center on the 10th of September. Joining the clean-up will be social change adventurers Michael Baretta and Camilla Howard whose anti-litter campaign, Trekking for Trash, will see them embarking on a 3000km expedition around South Africa’s coastline, starting in October 2012. The clean-up day will also be attended by Councillor Shimane Motlhamme, MMC Community Developer Councillor Chris Vondo and Regional Manager of Sports, Recreational Ms Busi Zuma.

Various activities will be hosted by Collect-a-Can in the park during the course of the week including competitions and demonstrations for the public. The week will culminate with an action packed Recycling Day event on Friday 14 September which included a second park clean-up and will be broadcast live by Jozi FM from the park between 09:00 and 16:00.

“We will have a mobile baler onsite all week to compact the used cans that we receive and would like to encourage as many community members as possible to bring their used cans and other recyclable waste to us at the Nkanyezi Recreational Sports Center so that it can be recycled,” Velaphi explains.

“We believe in working in partnership with all the key stakeholders in the communities that we operate in,” says Velaphi, “and as such we will be inviting the local counselors, municipal officials and members of the public to join us in showing their commitment to keeping South Africa clean.”
