September 2012 - Collect-a-Can cleans up with Moroka Community

Collect-a-Can in partnership with the City of Joburg has embraced National Recycling Week and has successfully kicked off the clean-up week at the Inkanyezi Sports and Recreation Centre and Park in North Moroka in Soweto earlier today.

Ward Councillor Shimane Motlhamme of Ward 34 in Region D, Moroka indicated, “We are proud to be setting the example in Moroka today; we are working towards Joburg being a world-class African city; we will not be able to achieve this vision if we don’t look after all the pockets of places in our Province. The community plays a very important role when it comes to achieving this goal, and it is very important that the community take ownership of their environment. We are glad to be working as a Department with Collect-a-Can; we are taking responsibility together, and we hope that through this the community commits to a cleaner environment; not only today but going forward as well.”

Regional Manager of Sports and Recreation Ms Busi Zuma, added, “Charity begins at home, let’s be the change that we want to see in others and set the example to other regions and provinces when it comes to a cleaner environment. No one else can clean up and be proud of our environment except us.”

Zimasa Velaphi, Public Relations and Marketing Manager at Collect- a-Can said, “Clean-up SA Week is celebrated annually across South Africa. The aim is to raise awareness with the general public about the importance of cleaning up litter and recycling in South Africa. It is something that can only be achieved if everyone takes ownership of the beauty of the environment where they work and live. Every South African regardless of age, race, background or economic status has a responsibility to help keep the country clean and litter free; individual involvement is key,” concludes Velaphi.

Michael Baretta from CAN DO! Trekking for Trash, an initiative that will be walking 3000 kms to educate communities about the importance of having a clean environment, joined the community in cleaning up Moroka, and encouraged, “Love where you live and be proud of your environment. If everyone cleaned up their immediate environment it will make a big difference.”

Collect-a-Can and the City of Joburg will be at the Inkanyezi Sports and Recreation Centre and Park until the end of the week. Community members can bring their used beverage cans to be weighed at the park for the week, where it will also be baled. Even though you can earn cash from Collect-a-Can, community members are also encouraged to identify other opportunities out of waste; there are lovely artworks that have been made in the past from waste, which makes waste – something so ugly - into something aesthetically very appealing.
