December 2012 - CAN DO! Trekking for Trash - Pledge your support this Festive Season

The CAN DO! Trekking for Trash duo, Michael Baretta and Camilla Howard have just passed the 1000km milestone mark on their 3000km walk, and have collected just over 1.5 tons of litter! We can’t all be social change adventurers but we CAN all take that first step towards a green and sustainable future.

Proud sponsors, Nampak Bevcan, Nampak DivFood and Collect-a-Can are pleased to announce that as part of ensuring the sustainability of this initiative, they have launched the CAN DO! Trekking for Trash Fund and have pledged R30 000 towards the fund already. The fund will be managed by Tshikululu, a Corporate Social Investment Fund Management Company.

Erik Smuts, Managing Director of Nampak Bevcan put the challenge out there, “We are challenging other corporates to also pledge their support to make a difference to both environmental awareness and entrepreneurial growth in South Africa.

“Funds raised will be used towards the economic upliftment of the informal sector in South Africa. Between 100 000 and 160 000 people are able to put bread on the table from the living that they make daily from collecting used cans. Through the funding scheme, money raised will go towards entrepreneurial skills development and environmental education thereby encouraging job creation and working towards simultaneously alleviating poverty and litter in Southern Africa,” Smuts concluded.

The public are also encouraged to pledge their support and can consider pledging R10.00 for every gift they buy this Festive Season. Keep in mind that there is a lot of additional packaging consumed and waste generated over the festive season; do your part to recycle!

By pledging support for this initiative, you will also be contributing towards:

  • Protecting the environment
  • Minimising waste and usage to our already brimming landfills
  • Saving raw materials and energy
  • Instilling a sense of responsibility to the environment to all those around you
  • Setting an example for the recovery of other recyclables
